Crucifer, the hymn tune to which we sing "Lift High the Cross," was composed by Sydney Hugo Nicholson. Nicholson was born in London, England in 1875. During his years of education, he attended Rugby School, New College, Oxford, and the Royal College of Music. He also worked as an organist for several churches, including Carlisle Cathedral, Manchester Cathedral, and Westminster Abbey.
In 1927, Nicholson founded the School of English Church Music. His works include Boys Choirs (1922), A Manual of English Church Music (1923), Quires and Places Where They Sing (1932), and Peter - The Adventure of a Chorister (1944). He also edited Hymns Ancient and Modern (1916 -1947). And in 1938, his great contributions to church music were recognized when he was knighted.
