Lowell Mason worked for fifteen years as a bank clerk, pursuing music on the side but not wanting to be known as a musical man. Numerous publishers rejected his early work, but eventually he was published by the Handel and Haydn Society of Boston, Massachusetts.
Though it did not even carry Mason's name, this collection, rejected by so many, eventually went through seventeen editions and sold 50,000 copies. Singing schools and church choirs adopted it for their use.
After this publication, Mason became the director of music at two churches in Boston, and later became the president of the Handel and Haydn Society in 1827. He also served as the first music teacher in an American public school, co-founded the Boston Academy of Music in 1833, and became music superintendent for the Boston school system in 838.
Mason was deeply immersed in the works of classical composers such as Handel, Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven. Their influence is seen in his composing, and he also used works by those composers as the basis for some of the hymn tunes that he arranged. Perhaps the most famous example of this would be the hymn tune ANTIOCH, to which we sing "Joy to the World! The Lord is Come."
