Godfrey Thring was born in the rectory at Alford, Somerset, England in the year 1823. Educated at Oxford, he was ordained as a deacon in 1846, and as a priest in the Church of England the following year. He served as curate at Strathfield-Turgis, then at Strathfieldsaye, then succeeded his father at Laford in 1858. He was appointed as rural dean at Wells Cathedral in 1867, then became prebend of East Harptree in Wells Cathedral in 1876.
Thring published several hymn books, including Hymns and Other Verses and Hymns Congregational and Others, both in 1866. He also was editor of A Church of England Hymn Book, 1880, which was a collection of extremely high quality and an influential work, being the source of many alterations of texts that were later used in other hymnals.
