Fred Bock was born in Great Neck, New York. Bock played the piano at age six and organ at age twelve. He attended Ithaca College, receiving his B.A. in Music Education. He earned his Masters and did Doctoral work in Church Music at the University of Southern California.
Bock first became involved in music publishing when he was a college student, publishing a band arrangement. He formed several music publishing companies, among which was Gentry Publications, publishers of music for school and concert use and Fred Bock Music Company, publishers of church music. He also acquired several other publishing companies, Raymond A. Hoffman Company, H. T. FitzSimons Company and Fox Music Publishing.
Bock served as Minister of Music at Bel Air Presbyterian Church in Los Angeles for 14 years, then at Hollywood Presbyterian Church for 18 years. He served as editor of Hymns for the Family of God, in 1976, which sold over 3 million copies. He was also the editor of Worship His Majesty, the evangelical hymnal published by Gaither Music Company. With his wife, Lois, he co-authored Creating Four Part Harmony, a book of practical ideas and help for ministers of music in churches. Bock was a keyboard recording artist, recording his own albums or accompanying other artists as background musician. He also worked as a studio musician for dozens of films and television shows.
