Ernest McMillan was an eminent Canadian arranger and composer. He began studying organ at the age of eight and was a fellow of London's Royal College of Organists in 1911. He received the extramural Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Oxford.
McMillan attended the Bayreuth Festival in 1914 but was interned as an enemy alien at the Ruhleben camp, near Berlin at the outbreak of World War I. He gained experience as a conductor while he was held there. And he was awarded the B.A. degree in absentia by the University of Toronto in 1915. The Prisoners of War Education Committee submitted his ode, England, to the University of Oxford, which won him his Doctor of Music degree in 1918.
McMillan returned to Toronto after his release, where he became the organist and choirmaster of Timothy Eaton Memorial Church, where he served from 1919 to 1925. In 1920 he joined the staff of the Canadian Academy of Music and served as its principal from 1926 to 1942. He was also dean of music faculty at the University of Toronto from 1927 to 1952.
He conducted the Toronto Symphony Orchestra from 1931 to 1956 and served as guest conductor in North and South America, Europe, and Australia. In 1935 McMillan was knighted by King George V, becoming the first Canadian musician to be knighted. He also received honorary doctorates from several Canadian and US institutions.
