Edward Shippen Barnes, studied at Yale University from 1910 until 1911, and then spent time in Paris as well. He played the organ in New York churches, including the Church of the Incarnation (1911-1912) and Rutgers Presbyterian Church (1913-1924).
He then went to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he played at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church from 1924 to 1938. From there, he moved to the First Presbyterian Church in Santa Monica California. His compositions included organ symphonies, arrangements, and books of religious music.
