Although the lyricist of "Savior, Like a Shepherd Lead Us" is not known for sure, it is generally attributed to Dorothy Ann Thrupp. Miss Thrupp was born in England, the daughter of Joseph Thrupp of Paddington Green. She wrote a number of hymns, found in various collections, including Friendly Visitor and Children's Friend, by Rev. W. Carus Wilson, and Selection of Hymns and Poetry for the Use of Infant Schools and Nurseries, by Mrs. Herbert Mayo, 1838. Miss Thrupp published Hymns for the Young, in 1836, and Thoughts for the Day, in 1836 and 1837, in which she published hymns that had previously appeared in Friendly Visitor.
