George William Warren composed the hymn tune NATIONAL HYMN specifically for the lyrics of "God of Our Fathers." He was born in 1828 in New York. He attended Racine College in Wisconsin. Beginning in 1846, he served as organist at St. Peter'1s Episcopal Church in Albany, New York for twelve years, and St. Paul's Church in Albany for two. In 1860 he became organist at Holy Trinity Church in New York City, where he served for 10 years before moving to St. Thomas' Church in New York.
Warren wrote a number of services, anthems, and hymn tunes, which he published in Hymns and Tunes as Sung at St. Thomas' Church, 1888. Racine College honored him with a Doctor of Music degree, in recognition of his church music accomplishments.
His funeral, attended by thousands, had no music played, as mourners felt there could no one worthy to play the organ that day.
