Phillip Bliss was so inspired by the words written by Horatio Spafford that he wrote the hymn tune VILLA DU HAVERE specifically for "It Is Well with My Soul". The tune is named for the ship on which the children perished. Bliss was the first to sing the hymn, which he introduced at Farwell Hall, Chicago. The hymn was first published in one of the Sankey-Bliss Hymnals, Gospel Hymns No. Two in 1876.
