The hymn tune MUELLER first appeared with "Away in a Manger" in James R. Murray’s Dainty songs for little lads and lasses, for use in the kindergarten, school and home, (1887). The hymn was entitled "Luthers’ Cradle Hymn (Composed by Martin Luther for his children and still sung by German mothers to their little ones)." Although attributed to Luther in the title, the initials J.R.M. appear as the composer. Other manuscripts attribute this hymn tune to Carl Mueller, but nothing is known of him.
