Thomas Helmore, the arranger of "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel," was instrumental in the revival of Gregorian chant - or Plainsong - in the Church of England. (Plainsong is usually synonymous with Gregorian chant. Both are categorized by unmeasured rhythm and a single line of melody.)
Helmore was ordained in the Anglican Church and was vice-principal and precantor at St. Mark's College, in Chelsea, where he served for thirty-five years. His works include Carols for Christmas-Tide, 1853, a collaboration with John Mason Neale, and Hymnal Noted, part II, published in 1856.
