Melchior Teschner who wrote the hymn tune ST. THEODULPH, to which we sing "All Glory, Laud and Honor", was born in 1584, in Fraustadt, Silesia. He was a gifted child. He entered the University of Frankfurt-an-der-Oder, studying philosopy, theology and music. He was cantor and teacher in the village of Schmiegel from 1605 to 1608. In 1609 he became cantor at Zum Kripplein Christi church in Fraustadt. In 1614 he was called to be pastor at Oberpritschen.
During his time at Oberpritschen, the plague struck. Over two thousand people died in Fraustadt alone. It was during this time he wrote his hymn for the dying, "Valet will ich dir geben." (I want to bid you farewell)
Teschner married in 1616 and had three sons and four daughters. He died in 1635, as a result of an attack by the Cossacks. One of his sons, and later a grandson, succeeded him as pastor of Oberpritschen.
