Joseph Gilmore

Birth: April 28, 1834, Boston, Massachusetts
Death: July 23, 1918, Rochester, New York

Joseph Henry Gilmore, who wrote the hymn, "He Leadeth Me, O Blessed Thought," was the son of New Hampshire Governor Joseph A. Gilmore. He graduated from Brown University in 1834 and Newton Theological Institute in 1861.

Gilmore was ordained in 1862 and pastored a Baptist Church in Fisherville, New Hampshire. He assisted his father from 1863 to 1864 while he was governor, at the same time editing the Concord, New Hampshire's Daily Monitor. From 1865 to 1867, he pastored Second Baptist Church at Rochester, New York, and he served as acting professor of Hebrew at the Rochester Theological Seminary from 1867 to 1868. In 1868 he became Professor of Logic, Rhetoric, and English Literature, and directed the English Department at the University of Rochester, New York.

Gilmore authored six books, including The Art of Expression, 1876, Familiar Chats on Books and Reading, and Outlines of English and American Literature, 1905.
